My journey with Optical Express started back in 2012, as a summer placement student in the London Shaftesbury Avenue branch.
While I was there I learned a great deal about how the Optical Express clinics are run and the teamwork involved. I knew that the company was a good fit for me after a month of being in this store. Optical Express offers a great structured training programme for students, and so I was pleased to return the following year as a pre-registration student.
During my pre-reg year I had the opportunity to work alongside several experienced optometrists. Their support and guidance proved to be invaluable, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. Training courses were arranged for all students at every stage of our pre-reg year, which helped immensely in preparing us for our assessments and final OSCEs.
Since qualifying 4 years ago, I have had the pleasure of supervising my own pre-registration students – an eye-opening experience for me, because I discovered that learning goes both ways. Being able to guide students and see their results has been really rewarding.
There are a number of great things about working for Optical Express. You’re always learning. No day is ever the same as the last, and I find myself constantly challenging myself and developing my skills.
We have an excellent clinical support team who are available to offer any further guidance we may require throughout the day, and I get to work alongside our experienced ophthalmologists and see a range of patients. The diagnostic equipment available to us is second to none, and having this equipment at my fingertips and learning to interpret the results has made my management of my patients much more effective. This year I completed my pre-surgery consultations and post-operative checks training, something I really enjoyed.
In addition, I have had the pleasure of working in several of our stores across our Southern and Northern Regions.
It has been incredible to be with patients as they travel on their own journeys, from their initial consultation to their post-surgery checks and sharing in their joy at seeing the world in a whole new way.
