Raymond, Optometrist, Inverness

Raymond, Optometrist Inverness

We caught up with Raymond after his 4th week at Optical Express to see how he’s getting on.

11 years into his optometry career, Raymond felt that he was treading water in his role. Having completed his degree at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, he’d moved to Aberdeen to do his pre-reg before making another move to Inverness to work for a large high street optician.

What helped him make his decision was the desire to help his patients achieve the visual freedom they wanted. “In my previous role I’d have contact lens customers who would ask me about laser eye surgery. It was very frustrating that I wasn’t able to do anything for them.”

When he noticed a vacancy at the Optical Express clinic in Inverness, Raymond applied and was successful. How has he found his first month in the company?

“It’s fair to say that my induction’s been both interesting and stimulating! Because I’ve been learning about refractive surgery there’s been a lot of information to take in, including how to conduct consultations with patients to determine their suitability for surgery and carrying out post-operative appointments. Once I’ve gained enough experience, I’ll be signed off and will carry these out at our clinic in Inverness to help more patients have the laser eye surgery they want.”

As well as enjoying the thrill of a new challenge and being able to apply the knowledge he already has to new situations, Raymond is also delighted that in the near future he’ll be able to gain an Independent Prescribing qualification through the partnership which Optical Express has with Glasgow Caledonian University. “The business offers this to all its optometrists, which I think shows its commitment to continued learning and development. As my career with the business progresses, I’d very much like to gain the IP qualification so that I’ll be able to manage patients who would otherwise have to go to an NHS eye department. I’ve spoken to colleagues who are on the course and it’s lots of work, but it’ll be worth it!”

The IP course aside, how is Raymond feeling about his future at Optical Express after completing his first month? He smiles, “I’m very pleased to say that I believe things are looking good for my career now! To any optometrist who may be feeling that their career’s started to stagnate, I’d say – get in touch and see what’s on offer here.

“Now I’m at Optical Express, I’ll definitely be able to offer a wider scope of care. I wanted to stay in Inverness and I’ve been able to do that, as well as reinvogorating my optometry career too.”
