Nine years ago, I made the move from Northern Ireland to join Optical Express in Edinburgh as an Optometrist. That kick-started my long career with the company.
When I got the opportunity to work in a surgery centre, I saw the happiness and satisfaction of our patients after surgery. That was when I knew that I had to make the move into refractive optometry. I couldn’t wait to train as a Specialist Refractive Optometrist – what an opportunity.
I completed my training in our Edinburgh clinic, and I really enjoyed being a part of our patients’ life-changing journeys. I examined them before and after surgery, and the change in them was amazing to see. Their positivity inspired me, and I knew then that I’d made the right decision in moving into the refractive side of the business. By having the opportunity to work with our world-class surgeons, I was able to grow my clinical confidence, and I appreciated all of the support from the clinical team.
After spending some time in my Specialist Refractive Optometrist role, I trained to be a Surgery Support Optometrist. This was a great way for me to develop and to understand the biometry of the eye and the lens selection for lens replacement surgery. I then took on more responsibility by training our new Optometrists. As a result, I was promoted to Optometry Development Manager. I truly enjoyed this role, because I got to train and support our Optometrists throughout their development. That’s not an opportunity that’s available at many other eye care providers.
Optical Express was extremely flexible and supportive when I came back from my maternity leave. They helped me to find the correct work life balance for my family, and that’s something I find is truly invaluable. My career development has always been supported by the company, and I’m currently undertaking the Independent Prescribing course at Glasgow Caledonian University, which is paid for by Optical Express. Completing this alongside other Optical Express Optometrists has really inspired and motivated me – I love having the support of my colleagues.
I recently became a Clinical Director for Scotland and Ireland. In addition to the responsibilities of this role, I still get to be a part of our Optometrists’ journeys by training them in our Glasgow Centre of Excellence, which I really enjoy.
There are so many ways to develop within Optical Express, and the company will support you all the way. If you want to improve your clinical ability then I would say that this is the best place to do it. They will help you find a career path that suits you. It’s a business which is always growing and has both our patients’ and employees’ best interests at heart.
