Over the past couple of months, we’ve introduced various members of our recruitment team. As Optical Express continues to expand both nationally and internationally, it’s the job of our recruitment function to place talented candidates in the variety of positions we offer across the company. This month we chat to Iona about the part she plays in delivering this, as well as her own career journey at Optical Express.
Iona’s been a recruitment specialist at Optical Express for just over 3 years. “I joined Optical Express in June 2016 as a recruitment administrator.” Iona explains. “It was my first professional job after graduation from Glasgow Caledonian University with a degree in Business Studies with HR. I was thrilled to land the role so soon after completing my studies.”
Since then, Iona has proven herself a valued member of the team and worked her way through the ranks. “From doing the administration role, which involved assisting my colleagues in a variety of day to day admin duties, I then went on to become the resourcer. This involved looking for potential leads for the specialists to follow up on. I then became a specialist myself, offering those leads the Optical Express opportunity.”
What is that opportunity exactly? “Our aim is to become the employer of choice in the industry and I truly believe what we can offer those who join is unrivalled.” Iona says. “Everyone has the opportunity to progress – just like I did – and we have a dedicated Learning and Development function to achieve this. All of our optometrists are offered full support to sit their Independent Prescribing qualification, as well as the chance to add to their current skillset by receiving full refractive training. There’s no other eye care company in the UK who can offer that.”
What’s the best part of the job for Iona? “It’s definitely the range of people I come into contact with every day, it means that no two days are the same for me.” She smiles. “I love working with my team, too.”
Iona’s received her fair share of CV’s and job applications in her time as a recruiter. So what advice would she give to someone thinking of applying for a role with Optical Express? “Get the basics right.” She says firmly. “Ensure your CV is up to date, with no typos. If you are invited to interview, ensure you do your research of the company, wear the correct clothes (smart and clean) and prepare answers to questions you might be asked about your skills and competencies. You can’t go wrong from there.”
Optical Express is the UK’s complete eye care provider and we’re always on the look-out for talented individuals to join our Optometry, Retail and Head Office teams. Search our current vacancies here, or you can contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01236 795146.
