Over the last six years, I’ve moved through the ranks at Optical Express.
I started in 2012 as a second year Optometry student, completing summer placement in the Liverpool store. The month I spent in clinic cemented the idea that Optical Express was the perfect fit for me, and I returned after graduating in 2013 to begin my pre-registration year, this time based in the Cambridge clinic. During this year I worked in clinics up and down the country, and had the benefit of having the structured support of Optical Express’ clinical trainers. I was lucky enough to work with a huge variety of patient types which gave me lots of experience.
After completing my pre-registration year, I returned to my home town of Liverpool and settled in to continue my career journey. Having worked alongside refractive optometrists during my training, I knew that this was something I wanted to be involved with too. I completed post-operative training first of all, and eventually this led onto pre-operative consultations and becoming a Senior Refractive Optometrist (SRO). All of the training has been at my own pace and I was fully supported by excellent clinicians throughout.
In December 2017, an opportunity to progress further arose and I was grateful to move up another step on the ladder when I was appointed Optometry Development Manager (ODM) for the North West region.
“I’d strongly urge any optometrist considering a refractive-based career to consider Optical Express”
This role sees me travel to various clinics across my region to undertake clinical appraisals, train new and current optometrists and act as a first port of call for optometrists should they need support. Alongside this, I conduct a full range of appointments from primary eye examinations to post-operative care. I have an extremely varied week, and this keeps things exciting for me. Being able to provide all types of refractive solutions ensures that I’m always on my toes, and can keep my clinical knowledge up to date to provide the best service possible, no matter who the patient is.
12 months ago, Optical Express offered 20 sponsored places on Glasgow Caledonian University’s Independent Prescribing course, and I was lucky enough to be included on the course. It’s been extremely interesting so far, allowing me to expand my knowledge on a wide range of ocular conditions and the medicines that will be available for me to prescribe once qualified. It’s also meant that I’ve met colleagues from up and down the country and developed a support network where we all help one another.
Ultimately, working for Optical Express has proven to be really rewarding so far – the joy on patient’s faces 24 hours after laser eye or natural lens replacement surgery never fails to make me proud to have been part of their life changing journey to freedom from glasses and contact lenses.
I couldn’t ask for a more enjoyable, supported and varied role than the one I have currently. I’d strongly urge any optometrist considering a refractive-based career to consider Optical Express. There’s a vast range of development opportunities on offer along with a dedicated support network who are always on hand to assist.
