A huge h-IP h-IP hooray to our Optometrists!

Optical Express Optometrists pass their Independent Prescribing qualification

Every optometrist at Optical Express is given the opportunity to gain their Independent Prescribing (IP) qualification. The qualification enables optometrists to clinically assess a patient, make a diagnosis and prescribe medication where necessary.

Optical Express is delighted to announce that the latest cohort of optometrists studying for the qualification have all PASSED their course and can now prescribe medication for a range of eye conditions to their patients, helping us maintain our status as the UK’s complete eye care provider.

As GP surgeries and hospitals strain under the pressure of increasingly busy waiting rooms, an optometrist should always be the first port of call for someone suffering with an eye condition. By being able to diagnose and prescribe relevant medications, the patient need only visit their local optometrist, easing the demand on the NHS.

Twelve optometrists from across the business started their studies 18 months ago which consisted of a mixture of learning methods including learning days at Glasgow Caledonian University, a detailed logbook, exams and a practical final assessment.

Clinical Services Director at Optical Express, Stephen Hannan, commented on the news, “Our most recent group of IP students worked hard to achieve their qualification and I would like to extend huge congratulations to them. In partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University, the Independent Prescribing course allows our optometrists to deliver the very best in patient care that they expect from Optical Express. I’m proud to say that we offer this qualification as standard to every optometrist, and fully support those who make the decision to undergo the course.”
